At Flagger Force, we strive to evaluate emerging technologies and invest in tools that drive value for our workforce and business operations. With nearly 2,000 full-time employees who manage over 1,000 active work zones daily across the eastern third of the United States, traditional internal communication methods like newsletters and email blasts do not effectively support our leadership in connecting and engaging with field employees. Plus, with crew members dispersed and deskless, ensuring everyone has access to training materials and resources is a complex and time-consuming task.
As a solution to these obstacles, in 2018, Flagger Force partnered with Beekeeper to launch a field communication app, branded internally as In the Zone (ITZ). The mobile app, which is powered by Beekeeper’s innovative software, serves as a centralized hub for our deskless and dispersed employees, allowing them to engage in two-way communication with our leadership team, easily access important documents, and review resources that are critical to their daily responsibilities in real time.
As a strategic next step in field communication optimization, in 2022, Flagger Force launched FF Learn in partnership with eduMe. FF Learn is a training and microlearning widget that delivers bite-sized safety lessons to an employee’s mobile device. The lessons can be completed from any location at the employee’s convenience. To streamline the essential communication and training technologies and bring information together in one place, Flagger Force worked with Beekeeper and eduMe to integrate the two solutions. As a result, employees can access FF Learn through the home screen of the In the Zone app.
Recently, Tamara Palmer, internal communications manager, had the opportunity to collaborate with Beekeeper and eduMe on a case study that details Flagger Force’s challenges effectively communicating with and training field-based employees and how the technologies have transformed engagement, retention, and safety compliance within our company.
