At Flagger Force, National Work Zone Awareness Week is more than just a date on the calendar—it’s a dedicated time to recognize the hardworking individuals who make safer roadways possible and elevate the importance of work zone safety in every community we serve.
This year, we celebrated the week with a series of events across our footprint, bringing together industry partners, legislators, and community leaders to spotlight the shared responsibility of safety and the power of collaboration. Here’s a look at how we marked the occasion:
Louisville, KY – April 17
We kicked off the week in Louisville, Kentucky, with an open house and celebration at our newly renovated Flagger Force facility. This event welcomed guests from across the utility and infrastructure sectors, as well as local government officials and community advocates.
It was a chance to connect, share our vision, and highlight the people and processes behind our work. As we approached National Work Zone Awareness Week, the timing couldn’t have been better to reinforce why safety, partnership, and preparedness matter.
We were honored to be joined by representatives from:
- Louisville Gas & Electric
- Louisville Water Company
- Louisville MSD
- Reynolds Sealing and Striping
We also welcomed members of the Louisville Metro Government, including Deputy Mayor Nicole George, who shared remarks on work zone safety and its impact on the community. A special moment included the reading of a proclamation by Geoff Wohl, legislative affairs representative for State Representative Josie Raymond, recognizing the significance of the week and the role safe work zones play in our daily lives.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. Your engagement and support play a key role in helping us deliver safe, reliable traffic control solutions throughout the region.
We’re proud to be growing in Kentucky—and committed to doing it the right way.
Central Pennsylvania – April 21
On Monday, April 21, we officially launched our National Work Zone Awareness Week campaign with a media spotlight in Central Pennsylvania. These interviews brought important attention to the start of construction season and the critical need for driver awareness in work zones.
Our President and CEO, Mike Doner, and Vice President of Risk and Safety, Luke Lazar, joined local news outlets to discuss the growing risks on our roadways and the responsibility we all share to keep roadside workers—and the public—safe.
- On FOX43, Mike Doner shared the real-world impact of distracted driving, the value of proper training, and how Flagger Force crews play a vital role in maintaining safety for everyone on the road. View the full interview here.
- On ABC27, Luke Lazar emphasized the importance of staying alert in work zones, especially as infrastructure improvements ramp up across the region. Watch the segment here.
These interviews helped kick off the week by amplifying our message to a wider audience: Safety isn’t just our priority—it’s a shared responsibility. By educating the public and reinforcing the role of safe driving behaviors, we’re helping create a culture that values and protects every person working in or driving through a work zone.
Regional Events – April 22
On Tuesday, April 22, Flagger Force teams were proud to show their support across multiple states, participating in key events hosted by transportation leaders and government officials to honor National Work Zone Awareness Week.
North Carolina
As the national host state for National Work Zone Awareness Week 2025, North Carolina held a major press event led by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). Flagger Force was honored to attend and support the event, with President and CEO Mike Doner, Vice President of Risk and Safety Luke Lazar, and members of our North Carolina field leadership team present.
The event highlighted the importance of work zone safety across the country and reinforced the shared responsibility of protecting roadway workers and travelers. During the event, NCDOT announced that they are working with off-duty law enforcement officers to increase drivers’ awareness. The HAWKS Program, short for Helping All Workzones Keep Safe, is a joint initiative between NCDOT and the North Carolina Highway Patrol to utilize off-duty officers to monitor and patrol work zones. This program provides a visual reminder to drive cautiously, improving mobility and safety for motorists and workers.
Pennsylvania
In Pennsylvania, Flagger Force team members gathered alongside leaders from PennDOT, the Associated Pennsylvania Constructors, the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission at a press event near the I-83 expansion project.
Speakers included:
- PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll
- PA Turnpike CEO Mark Compton
- PSP Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris
- Scott L. Rocuskie, President of Construction, New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc.
A standout moment came when Janessa Lingenfelter, a junior from Carlisle High School, shared her experience with Pennsylvania’s new “New Driver Work Zone Safety Program”—an engaging online training designed to equip young drivers with vital knowledge about work zone laws, signage, and safe driving practices.
Maryland
In Maryland, Flagger Force supported the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) at a press event held on a closed portion of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) near MD 151 and North Point Boulevard in Sparrows Point.
To assist the event, Flagger Force supplied a Portable Changeable Message Sign (PCMS), a vital traffic control device that helps communicate real-time updates to motorists.
Speakers included:
- Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller
- Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld
- Officials from the Maryland State Highway Administration, Maryland State Police, and Maryland Transportation Authority
Governor Wes Moore also issued a proclamation naming Wednesday, April 23, as “Go Orange Day,” and the Government House in Annapolis was lit orange to recognize the importance of work zone safety awareness.
Go Orange Day – April 23
On Wednesday, April 23, Flagger Force proudly participated in “Go Orange Day,” a nationwide initiative to raise visibility for work zone safety during National Work Zone Awareness Week.
We kicked off the day with a group photo, with employees from across the organization showing off their orange gear in support of safer work zones.
Adding some friendly competition to the celebration, the Employee Engagement Committee (EEC) hosted a “Wear the Most Orange” contest. Members of the EEC visited both the Operations Support Center (OSC) and the Corporate Office to select the winners.
In the field and across our offices, employees shared their Go Orange Day photos on ITZ, demonstrating our collective commitment to work zone safety and the vibrant culture that powers our organization.
As National Work Zone Awareness Week 2025 comes to a close, we are proud of the many ways our teams came together to elevate the importance of work zone safety across our communities. This week, from hosting and supporting events alongside industry leaders and public officials, to engaging with local media, and rallying our teams in orange to show their pride and commitment, showcased Flagger Force’s heart.
Safety is at the core of who we are. It’s reflected not just in the services we deliver, but in the partnerships we build, the training we provide, and the culture we foster daily. While National Work Zone Awareness Week is one moment to spotlight these efforts, our commitment to protecting the men and women on the road continues all year long.
Thank you to all our employees, clients, and partners who helped make this week a success and stand with us daily to keep work zones safe.
